Trout Spey Clinic for New and Experienced Anglers, August 8 & 9, 2026

Trout Spey Clinic August 8 & 9, 2026 on the Housatonic River in Connecticut

Spey rods are two handed rods that allow an angler to cast far with little effort and without any back cast. This means that anglers don’t have to wade as deeply or work as hard to cast their lines across the water. Just like their single handed siblings, spey rods come in many weights. Trout spey rods are the lightest of the bunch. A 3 weight spey rod is roughly equivalent to a 5 or 6 weight single hand rod. Spey angling is a blast. Trout spey rods are wonderful for many destinations in both the eastern and western US while slightly heavier rods are wonderful for steelhead trout and salmon. And … spey techniques work well on single handed rods!

We have reserved all of the main lodge rooms at Ten Mile River Preserve in Dover Plains, NY for Saturday, August 8, 2026. We will assemble for lunch at Ten Mile River Preserve (TMRP) on Saturday at 12 noon, where we will meet our guides and begin our clinic. We will begin the instructional phase of the clinic immediately following lunch. TMRP has plenty of room to cast, whether we are practicing on the ample lawns, the casting pond, and/or the Ten Mile River from the afternoon into the evening.  We will stop at dusk and get ready for a sit down, family style dinner at TMRP. No trip to TMRP is complete without the post dinner “hang” around the fire pit. In the morning, we will have breakfast at TMRP and before heading over to the Housatonic River in Connecticut for on-water instruction and fishing. Our program will conclude at the end of the day on Sunday.

Our instructor/guides for the weekend will be Erik and Samantha from Tight Lines Fly Shop in Parsippany, NJ. Tight Lines is the premier fly shop in our area for spey angling and our instructors will be bringing trout spey rods and flies for anyone who needs them. This is a beginner friendly clinic, no previous spey experience is necessary. Erik & Sam will also supply flies and leaders for anyone who would like to bring their own rods.

Trip Cost: $550.00 covers lunch, dinner, and breakfast. Double occupancy rooms. Guides fees, including tips and use of guide equipment, and flies.

Anglers will need their own waders, boots, wading belt, wading staff, and Connecticut fly fishing license. Anglers who have their own spey rods, trout spey suggested, are encouraged to bring them.
