Day Trip to the Connetquot River, Long Island

The wading is easy and the trout are plentiful. This day trip is a recommended follow-up to the Linda Hotchkiss Annual Fly Fishing School. It is an opportunity for NEW ANGLERS to fish with mentors, apply their newly acquired skills, and best of all, learn how hook, play and release fish. We have the entire river to ourselves, so more experienced anglers will have plenty of room to fish their own beats.
The Connetquot River is a hidden jewel running through an old hunting club converted to a state preserve. It is located on Long Island, about 90 minutes outside of New York City. As you head to your section of the river, take a moment to park your butt on the bench we donated to the park many years ago.
We will meet at 8am for coffee and bagels before we head out to the river. Please pack your own lunch. We will have a cooler with water, soft drinks and snacks.
Required:
New York State fresh-water fishing license, waders w/ belt, wading boots, wading staff, polarized sunglasses, hat, bug spray, sunscreen, 5-weight fly rod & matching reel, fly line, leader & tippet. Although your trip leaders will have some flies to loan.
Suggested flies:
Dry flies: blue-winged olives, caddis (gray, green & tan), sulphers (all sized 14-22)
Terrestrials: San Juan worm (see event photo!), hoppers, beetles, ants
Nymphs: prince nymphs, hare’s ear, Walt’s worm
Streamers: wooly buggers (black & chartreuse), gray ghost, mickey finn, muddler minnows
